Matter Of Form

From Redcarnation Hotels to Stylus.com, a five-year embedded development partnership with one of the UK's leading luxury and lifestyle agencies. Performance-first builds, enterprise-scale platforms, and a working relationship that Schema Studios carried forward when they launched — because that is what trust looks like over time.

Five years is a long time in digital. Frameworks change, design trends rotate, client expectations rise, and the tools that were cutting-edge become baseline. What does not change — what compounds in value with every passing year — is the kind of trust that only comes from working together consistently, through difficult projects and tight deadlines, and always finding a way to deliver something you are both proud of.

The relationship with Matter Of Form is built on exactly that. What began with a single project brief has grown into one of the most substantive development partnerships we have — five years of building high-end digital experiences for some of the most demanding clients in the UK luxury and lifestyle market, as an integrated part of Matter Of Form's delivery team.

Where It Started: Redcarnation Hotels

Redcarnation Hotels is the kind of client that sets the standard for a partnership. A collection of boutique luxury properties — each with its own personality, its own story, and guests who expect a digital experience that reflects the care that goes into the physical one. The brief called for a website that could carry the emotional weight of each property individually while holding together as a coherent brand across the portfolio.

Matter Of Form — luxury hotel lobby

The technical demands were matched by the creative ones: editorial-quality photography presented at full impact without sacrificing load performance, a multi-property architecture that allowed each hotel's content to breathe independently within a shared design system, booking engine integration that felt like part of the experience rather than a redirect to a third party, and a content management setup that a non-technical team could operate without developer support on every update.

Delivering that required the kind of development partner who could read a design file and understand not just what it said but what it meant. Pixel-perfect was the minimum. What Matter Of Form needed was a team who understood luxury hospitality well enough to push back when a technical implementation would have undercut the brand experience — and to find solutions that held both the design intent and the performance requirements simultaneously.

Redcarnation Hotels launched. It performed. It set the template for how the partnership would work.

Stylus: Enterprise Scale, Uncompromised Craft

If Redcarnation Hotels established what the partnership could do in luxury hospitality, Stylus.com demonstrated its range. Stylus is one of the UK's leading trend intelligence and creative research platforms — a B2B product used by designers, strategists, and creative directors at some of the world's best-known brands. The audience is sophisticated, the content is dense, and the platform needed to handle both with authority.

The build was enterprise in every dimension: a content platform handling thousands of articles, reports, and trend analyses; a search and discovery layer that needed to surface relevant content across a deep archive without frustrating a user with a specific thing in mind; membership and access management across subscriber tiers; performance at scale, where the page that loads in 1.2 seconds on a quiet Tuesday needs to hold that time on a Monday morning when a new trend report has been released and the audience arrives simultaneously.

Stylus.com is the project we point to when a prospective client asks what enterprise-level digital development looks like from us. Not because of the technology — the technology is in service of the product — but because of what it demonstrates about the depth of the partnership. A project of that complexity, delivered to that standard, by a team where Matter Of Form led the creative and strategic direction and Octopus carried the engineering, is only possible when both sides understand their role completely and trust each other enough to fill it without constant oversight.

Five Years as an Integrated Development Partner

Redcarnation and Stylus are the landmarks. Between them and alongside them, there are projects we have delivered together that span the full width of the luxury and lifestyle market: hotel and hospitality brands where we know the booking engine integrations, the PMS connection patterns, and the content management requirements that make multi-property sites manageable for the teams who maintain them; consumer lifestyle brands where the visual standards are as exacting as any luxury hotel and the performance requirements are just as unforgiving; and creative industry platforms where the content itself is the product and the design must serve it without overshadowing it.

Over five years, we have become fluent in how Matter Of Form thinks. We understand their design philosophy — the attention to typographic detail, the way they use space, the motion sensibility that gives their work a particular kind of refinement that is immediately recognisable. We understand their clients' expectations, which are high and specific. And we understand the pressure points of a live agency engagement: the moments when something needs to be resolved fast, when a client has changed a requirement two weeks before launch, when a performance issue is surfaced in QA that needs a creative technical solution rather than a compromise on design.

We have been in those moments enough times together that neither team needs to explain the situation from scratch. The shared context — the years of working through problems together, the established patterns for how we communicate, the knowledge of what each team does best — compresses the response time to something that a newer partnership cannot replicate.

Performance Is Non-Negotiable

Every project we deliver with Matter Of Form is built to pass Core Web Vitals without compromise. LCP under 2.5 seconds on the pages that carry the brand's first impression — typically the homepage and key landing pages with full-width editorial photography. CLS at or near zero, because layout shifts on luxury websites are jarring in a way that directly contradicts the brand promise. INP responsive on every interactive element, because a navigation that hesitates on a mid-range mobile is not a luxury experience.

The photography volumes in luxury hospitality and lifestyle are high. Unoptimised, they are the primary cause of the performance failures that plague this category of website. We handle image delivery through next-generation formats — AVIF with WebP fallback — served at the correct resolution for each breakpoint from CDN edge nodes, with focal point preservation and lazy loading below the fold. The editorial photography that defines the visual experience is present at full impact. The performance budget is held.

Google's Core Web Vitals are a ranking signal — which means that every performance investment also compounds as organic search performance over time. For luxury hospitality clients competing for high-intent search terms, the sites we build together are designed to rank as well as they convert.

Accessibility and Security, Built In

WCAG 2.2 Level AA compliance is a baseline requirement on every Matter Of Form project we work on. Not an add-on scoped separately, not a post-launch remediation exercise, but a development standard applied throughout the build. Accessible HTML is better HTML: more semantic, more resilient, faster to parse, and more correctly interpreted by search engines. The investment in accessibility pays across multiple dimensions simultaneously.

Security follows the same logic. The luxury and lifestyle clients in the Matter Of Form portfolio are visible, high-value targets. We apply security best practices at every layer of every build: dependency auditing, content security policies, authentication hardening, and input validation at every system boundary. When a live client platform has come under attack — and in this market, it happens — our response has been immediate. Out of hours, over weekends, at any point in the calendar when it has been needed. Contain, patch, restore, document. The client is protected. The site is back. The relationship is stronger for having been tested.

Integrations That Actually Work

The luxury hospitality and lifestyle digital ecosystem is complex. A hotel group website is not a standalone digital product — it is connected to a Property Management System, a booking engine, a CRM, a loyalty programme, a digital concierge platform, and often a channel manager that coordinates rates across distribution channels. Getting those integrations right — reliably, with correct data flows, appropriate error handling, and monitoring that catches problems before guests do — is the difference between a website that supports the property's commercial operation and one that occasionally undermines it.

We have built these integrations enough times with Matter Of Form that we know where the complexity lives in each major PMS and booking engine platform, what the common data model mismatches are, and how to design integration architecture that can survive a PMS migration without rebuilding the entire connection layer. That domain knowledge is not documentation — it is experience, accumulated across five years of building things that work in production.

Motion, Craft, and the Details That Define Quality

Matter Of Form's design work is defined by its motion language — the way pages arrive, how images reveal themselves, the transitions that make a digital experience feel considered rather than assembled. Implementing that motion correctly is as much engineering as it is craft.

Animation that causes layout shift, that drops frames on real devices, or that ignores a user's reduced-motion preference is not beautiful — it is a failure. We implement every motion element with GPU-composited transforms, frame rate testing on mid-range mobile hardware, and full support for the prefers-reduced-motion media query. The experience that a user on an M2 MacBook sees should be felt, not consciously noticed. The experience that a user on a three-year-old Android sees should be fast and clean, without the motion that their device cannot sustain smoothly.

These are the details that separate a website that looks good in a browser on a developer's machine from one that performs correctly for the full range of real users. After five years of working to Matter Of Form's standard, these details are not things we have to be reminded about. They are part of how we build.

Building Trust in the UK Luxury Market

The UK luxury digital market is not large. The agencies who work in it know each other. The clients who commission work at this level talk to each other. Reputation travels fast in both directions — a team that delivers consistently builds its standing in this market project by project, year by year; a team that does not is known for that equally quickly.

Five years with Matter Of Form is, among other things, a statement about reputation. They have brought us into their most demanding projects and their most visible clients because the track record justified the trust. We have maintained that trust by treating every project — large or small, straightforward or complex — with the same standard of care.

The relationship with Schema Studios, which grew out of this partnership when senior members of the Matter Of Form team launched their own studio, is the continuation of the same story. The people, the standards, and the working model all carried across. That continuity — the fact that the best people from the partnership chose to continue it in a new context — is the strongest endorsement of what five years of working together actually built.

We are proud to be Matter Of Form's development partner. We are proud of what we have built together. And we are here for whatever comes next.
